What do you think about this statement regarding North Korea?
from the LA Times:
“North Korea must be treated as a regional problem to be managed by a regional concert of powers, with China in the lead. The U.S. role in all this should be sympathetic — and distant.”

Don’t you think this matches our capabilities pretty much?
All great answers so far. Incredible.

What does our capabilities have to do with how N.Korea is handled. We have always stated it is a regional problem, thus the 6 party talks. We chose to not go any further than that. And after seeing what clowns they made out of the clinton negotiating team, you can understand our position.
the whole state of California is filled with liberal government bashers. who cares what the la times has to say. for that matter the NY times has become a liberal rag sheet. too many reporters caught making up stories.
I don’t think it’s a comment about our capabilities, it’s a comment about the enormous role that China plays with North Korea. China is pretty much the only country that interacts with them, providing them fuel and support.
China has the only believable threat in the area. If they threaten N. Korea, N. Korea must listen or risk losing their support, and their country.
No, what it matches is our current actions. The US has always said that NK is a regional issue, which is why their are 6 parties in the discussions, with china taking the lead. It is NK that wants it to be a bilateral issue. (reason = $).
Our capabilities are endless. Including the total destruction of NK.
With N. Korean nukes that can likely reach AT LEAST Alaska and Hawaii I’m in no way content to declare it a “regional problem” and count on the Communist Chinese to protect America’s interest.
A “regional problem”? Sounds like the kind of vomit the LA Times would spew out.
What has this to do with the capabilities of the US ?
It is a regional problem.
Would you like countries halfway around the world that you have no political or economical ties with dictating how your country should be run ?
I’m no commie lover but the cold war is over there is no need for the US to plant democratic flags on every piece of rock on the globe.
North Korea is a direct neighbor of China and if China thinks it can untangle North Korea then the US should just step aside….
I think capabilities is the wrong word.
As far as regional problem- well, why would we stay out of this “regional problem” when we’ve pushed ourselves into so many other regional problems?
The real problem is we’ve become the schoolyard bully. We have no qualms about attacking weaker adversaries, but anyone with the ability to stand up to us will be left alone.
