England is one of the most successful soccer teams and has participated in 11 World Cup editions so far. In 1950, the Rice Stadium was built to serve as the training and playground of the Rice Owls football team. It was also in this stadium wherein the Americans bore witness to the inspiring speech of the late-President John F. Kennedy, who spilled the beans about the possibility of sending humans to the moon, and that they are the first to do that among the nations of the world. Years later, the speech became a reality. The rise of the Rice Owls to national limelight was to be credited to the patient and skillful coaches of the team through the years Phillip Arbuckle (1912-17,’19-23), John Anderson (1918), John Heisman (1924-1927), Claude Rothgeb (1928), (1929-1933), (1934-1939), (1940-1966), Bo Hagan (1967-1970), Bill Peterson (1971), Al Conover (1972-1975), Homer Rice (1976-1977), Ray Alborn (1978-1983), Watson Brown (1984-1985), Jerry Berndt (1986-1988), Fred Goldsmith (1989-1993), Ken Hatfield (1994-2005), Todd Graham (2006), David Bailiff (2007-present). Representing the University of Houston, the Houston Cougars is an NCAA Division I college football that takes pride in years of excellence. Commonly referred to as ?UH?, the Houston Cougars have established their name well in collegiate football and has played their first season in 1946. The team has won over 10 conference championships over the years and had players winning coveted awards including the Heisman Trophy award and the Davey O?Brien Quarterback Award which was both awarded to Andre Ware in 1989. Other of their pride trophies earned include the Sammy Bough Trophy won by David Klingler in 1990 and the Lombardi Award won by Wilson Whitley in 1976. Four of their championship wins started in the Missouri Valley Conference. It was during the 1950?s when they flourished the stadiums and gained utmost respect from the conference. After their stint with the Missouri Valley Conference, they later joined the Southwest Conference and have won, yet again, another 4 more championship titles in 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1984. Finally, after joining Conference USA, the team have won in 1996 and won again a decade after. Though the team was originally created in 1946, talks of having a collegiate football team for the University of Houston dates 5 years earlier. As early as 1941, the Houston Cougars have been battling the Rice Owls. This rivalry lasted for decades and has become their constant opponent to reach the championships. Shasta the Cougar, clad in the colors red and white, is the team?s official mascot while the Robertson Stadium, previously called Houston Public School Stadium, is the where many victorious bouts against rivals took place. Currently spearheaded by head coach Kevin Sumlin, the team is again packed with energy, passion and commitment to relive the rich history the team has. Sumlin has just been named the 11th head coach for the Houston Cougars just last year but surely is not a newbie in coaching football. Included in his resume, he has been a co-offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners. He has been famous for drawing a rather large crowd in his debut game as a coach which actually made history. Sumlin also has been the very first Afro-American head coach that the cougars had. Since their last triumph in 2006, all that the Cougars can think of is filling that gap of not winning last year and commence to become over-all champs once again. Led with 20 seniors including Mark Hafner, Mighty Inyang and Cody Lubojasky, there is no stopping this enraged team to reach their hope being hailed champs again. Though freshman Patrick Edwards injured his leg in the game with the Marshall Thundering Herd previously, they are far from being disheartened by the incident. Rather, the team has renewed faith in themselves to still make it in the end. Currently in a three way tie together with Tulsa Green Wave and Rice Owls at 5-1 stats in the Conference USA count, there is without a doubt that the Houston Cougars would emerge victorious once again.  Read more... Alabama is more than sweet homes. This is the home of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers. They are an NCAA Division I Footbal Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A). They are competing members of the East Division of Conference USA. Their home games are played in the Legion Field, an off campus stadium with a capacity of 71,594. The Blazers? origins started in 1989, where UAB began with the play of an organized football club. After two years a football club team, then UAB President Charles McCallum and Atheltic director Gene Bartow announced then that the university will be competing as an NCAA Division III team in the fall of 1991, with Kim Hilver as the first head coach. The 1993 season marked a big difference for the UAB Blazers. During this time, an NCAA ruling has resulted in reclassifying the UAB Blazers under a I-AA team after only a pair of seasons in the Division III level. The 1995 season, however, marked the Blazers? first all time victory over a Division I-A opponent on the road against a North Texas squad with a final score of 19-14. From 93-95, UAB competed as a Division I-AA independent squad. Before their jump to a Division I-A category team in the 1996 season, they complied a 21-12 overall record. Watson Brown, the ultimate face of the coaching team of the Blazer for over a span of twelve years, resignes on December of 2006. The search for a new head coach came down to former Alabama player and Georgia offensive coordinator Neil Callaway. Milestones and Achievements Though lacking in tradition, the University of Alabama in Birmingham has not lacked the skill and the might needed to topple down traditions of football teams. Since their move from up to Division I-A, UAB has made it a point to play many of college football?s traditional powers. They kicked off the new millennium by achieving a momentous victory against LSU in Baton Rouge. Also in 2004, they earned their first bowl trip ? the Hawaii bowl. UAB Blazers Recent News The Blazers have just recently set the Louisiana Stadium after their scorching 41-24 victory over Conference USA foe Tulane just this Sunday afternoon. Quarterback Joe Webb has the hottest streak as he ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns to cement the win. Webb completed 15 of his 21 passes for 154 yards, has scored on runs of 31, three and one yard for the Blazers with a record of 3-7, 2-4 in Conference USA. The Blazers are heating up as well as senior cornerback Kevin Sanders had two interceptions on that day, too. This is a very important win for the Blazers as this ultimately erased their memories of the loss against South Mississippi two weeks ago. Expect a huge crowd to gather in at Legion Field as the Blazers are set to play their final home game of the season next Saturday as they host East Carolina. The Oklahoma Sooners represent the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. All teams in the Oklahoma University are given the nickname ?Sooners? which came from the name given to the people who participated in the land rushes that opened in the Oklahoma Indian Territory. This land rushes was opened to non-natives who illegally claimed choice land by coming early before the legal time of entry. This is why they were called ?sooners?. The Sooners first played football in 1895. The Sooners home stadium is the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and the field name is Owen Field in honor of Bennie Owen. The official mascot of the team is Sooner Schooner. The current coach of the team is Bob Stoops who was with the team when they earned their mmost recent title in 2000, the Orange Bowl title. Championships and Important Moments: The Sooners have been playing football even before Oklahoma became a state. Constant accomplishment through time has been the tradition of the Oklahoma football team. They have a very successful legacy and have won numerous awards and titles. They won 7 National Championships. These are in 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985 and 2000. They have claimed national championships than any other Big 12 program. They have 41 Conference Titles, the last of which is in 2007. The team have 5 Big 12 Conference Titles and 6 Big 12 South Division Titles. The Big 12 conference were won in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and the south division titles were won in years 2000, 20002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. They had 41 bowl appearances and an all-time bowl record of 24-16-1. The team won 7 Associated Press National Championships. With all these titles and awards, they have become the most decorated football team in the Big 12. The Sooners players have also won numerous awards such as 144 All-Americans, 4 Heisman trophies, 5 Outland trophies, 3 Lombardi awards, 18 college football Hall of Fame, 2 Pro football Hall of Fame, and many more. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma Sooners’ quarteback is currently in the running for the trophy, along with Texas Tech’s Graham Harell and Colt McCoy. Oklahoma University has a record 9-1 overall and 5-1 Big 12. They spent this week preparing for Texas Tech.
