Golden Globes Help Increase Movie Ticket Sales and Boost TV Ratings
If you’re anything like me, you were sitting on your couch on Monday, January 15th watching the Golden Globe Awards to see which of your favorite stars, movies and television shows would take home awards. (And, to see what everyone was wearing!) This year’s show did not disappoint. Newcomer America Ferrara, from the new ABC show Ugly Betty, took home a Best Actress award. Jennifer Hudson, of American Idol fame, won her first Golden Globe for her supporting role in the film Dreamgirls. Some old timers were also honored, such as Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada. For the complete list of this year’s Golden Globe winners see: http://www. accessmylibrary. com/coms2/summary_0286-29249626_ITM
One of the side effects of winning a Golden Globe, or just being nominated, can be an increase in ticket sales and theatre exposure, for those respective movies. Films that most folks have not seen, or even seen previews for, end up getting the exposure they need and deserve. People are going to their theatre and watching films they wouldn’t have normally seen, had these films not have gained notoriety due to their success at the Golden Globes.
According to Salon. com, The Fox Searchlight film “The Last King of Scotland” is reaping the benefits due to Forest Whitaker winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama, for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The film expanded its theatre exposure to 495 theatres, and took in an estimated $1. 8 million the weekend following the broadcast of the Golden Globes.
“Babel”, starring Brad Pitt, won for best drama, and increased its ticket sales by 500% the weekend following the awards. The drama “The Queen”, which won 2 awards, also saw a large lift, jumping up to the 9th spot at the box office, an increase of 233 percent! Many of these Golden Globe winning films and actors have received Oscar nominations, and are expected to have repeat performances when the Oscars air on February 25.
Television shows are also seeing an increase in viewers due to their accolades at the Golden Globes. According to Media Week, Ugly Betty, which won the Golden Glove for Best TV comedy, drew its largest audience in over 3 months just three days after its win. Grey’s Anatomy, which won for Best Drama, also won its time slot on the Thursday following their win.
That being said, it does not mean Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, or any winning or nominated TV show, will perform that well for the long haul. The networks do a good job of creating buzz for their awarding winning shows, but it does not always work. According to AZNightBuzz. com, an unscientific look at the past 10 years of TV winners at the Golden Globes in the Best Drama, Best Comedy and Best Actor and Actress categories indicates the award almost never delivers a lasting ratings pop. In fact, many TV shows decline in ratings after winning. Last year’s Best Drama winner, “Lost,” is down 18 percent so far this season.
So, will television’s winners have lasting power the remainder of the television season? Will the Golden Globe movie winners have repeat performances at the Oscars in February? We’ll just have to tune in and see!
The 64th annual Golden Globe Awards were held on January 15th. The Golden Globe Awards honor the year’s top films and TV shows, and are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Comedy in Seattle
It is said that laughter really is the best medicine. If that is the case then Seattle should be a pretty healthy city. There is plenty of laughter to be had in this great city and even more to be shared with those who choose to visit. If you are planning a trip to Seattle Washington, be sure to check out the many comedy clubs that can be found throughout the city. There are at least three of these comedy clubs that stand out and make a lasting impression. The first one is Comedy Underground. With locations in both Seattle and Tacoma you can pretty much take your pick between whichever one has the comedian you are most interested in seeing perform. The clubs actually have a fairly impressive menu and you are allowed to eat during the show. Just make sure that your food doesn’t smell too good or the comedian might heckle you. The really good news is that Comedy Underground is open 7 nights a week with several open mic nights when you can see local talent. Those are often the most interesting to watch. Tickets can be purchased for reasonable prices; especially during open mic nights and the performances are a lot of fun to watch. This is a great way to spend an evening and bring a date. Giggles Comedy Night Club is the next one on my list. This club is only open Thursday through Sunday nights and has a one-drink minimum when there is a headliner and a two-drink minimum on open mic nights. Giggles features acts that you may have seen around a bit rather than only offering local talent. The comedy is good and the drinks are better. This is a great place to go and bring a group of friends along. The more the merrier when it comes to comedy, laughter, and liquor. Just remember to appoint a designated driver or have other plans for your ride home. Now we get to the Jet City Improv. The Jet City Improv has grown and expanded over time and is now one of the most popular theatre experiences in the Seattle area. One of the great things about these shows is that they are suitable for all ages. So this is a more family friendly environment than most other comedy clubs in the area. The entire show is improvised nightly based on audience participation and suggestions. This is one of the most hilarious theatre experiences you can possibly imagine. And the more you can imagine the funnier it will get. I seriously recommend that you bring some Advil or some other sort of pain medicine along with you, as your sides will hurt before the night is over. Whether you are a serious fan of comedy or someone who is only interested because it is a liver performance, I think you will be surprised by how much fun you have at any one of these three locations. My personal favorite is the improv but this is solely based on the audience participation factor and the fact that you pretty much know what to expect when going in. You never know what you are going to get when you hit an open mic night at some comedy clubs-sometimes the show is wonderful and sometimes the show is not so wonderful. The important thing is that you laugh often and you laugh well.
Family Friendly Comedy Shows in Orlando Will Tickle Your Funny Bone
If you have been to any live shows featuring stand-up comics recently you will know that most comedians get their laughs with jokes that are off-color and definitely not suitable for children. Orlando vacation-goers however can take the whole family to two destinations that offer clean, high quality humor on a nightly basis. The first of these destinations is the SAK Comedy Lab. It is a 200 seat improvisational comedy theater in downtown Orlando. In addition to presenting shows, SAK is a training school for up and coming comedians and runs a SAK University with four levels of comic training. How good are the SAK shows? Some young visitors who have been through all the attractions of Orlando, including Disney World, Sea World, Universal and the indoor sky diving at Sky Ventures, put SAK Comedy Lab as their number one or two attractions. It is that good! There are a number of different shows running at SAK but the main one is Duel of Fools which is a “high energy improv competition” with audience judges. Seasonal variations of this show are called Yule for Fools (Christmas) and Love for Fools (Valentine’s Day). In addition to the main show, you can also see shows put on by the students and interns of the SAK Comedy Lab. Famous “graduates” from SAK include: Wayne Brady, Dee Bradley Baker, Karey Kirkpatrick and Jonathan Mangum. All of them were members of the ensemble prior to going on to careers elsewhere. One of the best features of the SAK Comedy Lab is that it is reasonably priced. Admission for Duel of Fools is only $15 and refreshments are also inexpensive as well. Parking is between $8-10. This is an alcohol free venue and definitely suited for the whole family. SAK Comedy Lab is located at 380 W. Amelia Street Orlando, FL 32801 First floor of Centroplex II Parking Garage and you can call them at 407-648-0001. Another great family-friendly comedy hub in Orlando is the Outta Control Dinner Show. The main comedian, Tony Brent, is a magician and he gets the audience involved in his truly amazing tricks. It’s difficult to eat when you are laughing so hard, but you will want to try it here because they serve you unlimited amounts of very good pizza and supplement it with tossed salad, popcorn, beer, wine, soda and desserts. In addition to being family-friendly, Outta Control is very reasonably priced with adult tickets selling for $24. 95 and tickets for kids and seniors are $16. 95. If you have a group of 8 or more you can also book a birthday party or hold other group or corporate events there. Outta Control Dinner Show is part of the WonderWorks fantasy attraction and is located at 9067 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32819 . While walk in visitors are allowed, it is better to reserve for the dinner show by calling (401) 351-8800Between these two attractions you will certainly find something to get the whole family laughing, so don’t miss them the next time you visit Orlando.

Tickets and Seating Arrangements for Chicagoâs Apollo Theater and Aragon Ballroom
Not to be confused with New Yorkâs Apollo, Chicagoâs Apollo Theater was built by Jason Brett and Stuart Oken and first opened its doors to the public in 1978. Formerly, there was a theater with the same name on Randolph Street in Chicago that closed in 1987 and was subsequently demolished in 1989. Today, the Apollo Theater is located at 2540 N. Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Park, one of Chicagoâs most prestigious neighborhoods. Redesigned by Michael Lustig into a breathtaking concrete and glass design, when you step into the Apollo Theater, the lobby welcomes every visitor with an art exhibit, full bar and souvenir counter. The seating arrangement in the Apollo Theater is situated to provide the maximum enjoyment for every person in attendance. An intimate crowd of just 440 persons is situated in eleven rows around the three quarter thrust stage. Plush seating provides comfort and gives every member of the audience a thrilling theatrical experience. Dismiss Your Traffic Tickets From Broward County Traffic School
Broward County traffic tickets are no laughing matter for drivers who get pulled over and find themselves convicted of a moving violation. Yet among the options for “alternative” traffic schools are comedy classes that take the driver through painful puns and insensitive mocking while purporting to teach them to be safer drivers. A 21st-century option to try instead of the traditional Broward driving school that does the job well, however, is the online traffic school. These relatively new innovations, which allow students to log on to a web-based account from home or office in order to complete their coursework, are the real enhancement to old-style traffic school Broward County needs. These classes bring the best of the best to the student, distilling historical knowledge about driver safety from teams of experts and delivering it in a consistent, easy-to-follow, easy-to-handle way. For those who don’t have the time or inclination to spend hours sitting in a classroom, heading online is an excellent way to gather that information and fulfill court obligations. The courses generally allow you to come and go as you please, and keep track of total time elapsed and which sections of the course have been covered. They permit the early-riser to get started while the rest of the house sleeps, and the busy businessperson to work while on a lunch break. The flexibility of these classes is one of the main selling points for taking them instead of traditional (or “alternative”) classroom traffic school courses. The cost is generally comparable, but the convenience makes them win in a head-to-head battle of benefits. The time spent looking for a class, changing your schedule around to attend it, and driving to and from the course are not applied toward the total time spent “in traffic school” according to the Florida courts. Therefore, any of that time that you can avoid spending is time that you get back for yourself. Working online allows you to do this. If you’re the sort of driver who would rather get the entire thing over with and have your Broward County traffic tickets dismissed immediately, online can still be a great option for you. The courses don’t just allow you to come and go, they allow you to come and stay as well. If you want, you can register and take the entire class in one sitting, starting immediately if that is your preference. It’s essentially the equivalent of having a Broward driving school course available that has a starting and ending time of whatever you prefer, and a location that is whatever is most convenient for you. With all the options open to you online, there is no reason to go to a classroom course to fulfill your online traffic school obligations, unless the class is taught in the same building as your office or home, at the exact time of your choosing. Based on those parameters, traffic school instructors are the only ones who would benefit from taking defensive driving in a classroom, and hopefully they’re not the ones getting traffic tickets!
