The Orange Bowl is one of many bowl games this season that should produce a fantastic finish. VT and Cincy are evenly matched. It’s one of the BCS’s top Bowls. And it will be broadcast on FOX. Orange Bowl Virginia Tech – Cincinnati Spread: Cincinnati by 1. 5 Bet on: Cincinnati Why? Cincinnati will beat the Hokies by more than a point and a half because they have a vastly superior offense. The Bearcats are ranked 50th in the nation in total yards per game at 375. 3, while the Hokies are ranked 107 in that category, averaging a modest 296. Cincinnati averages 27. 3 points per game, whereas VT only scores 22. 2 points per game. Defense should be a factor here as well, but the difference between how good the Hokies are on D (13th nationally, 17. 5 points per game) versus how good the Bearcats are (26th, 20. 2) is not significant enough to outweigh Cincy’s edge on offense. Why Not? Boston College was no pushover this season, but the Hokies sure shoved them in the last game of the season to win the ACC title game. To many fans, this is a reason to think that VT is peaking at just the right time. However, you’ve got to think that the Vegas odds setters know you saw that game (and only that VT game), and consequently know you’re going to bet on VT in the Orange Bowl because of it. You know what I think? VT’s game versus BC was simply bait for easy marks. Hawaii Bowl Hawaii-Notre Dame Spread: Hawaii by 1. 5 Bet on: Notre Dame Why? Vegas is trusting that you’re going to bet against Notre Dame for four main reasons: 1. You love to hate the Irish. 2. Notre Dame’s nine-game bowl losing streak is highly publicized. 3. Hawaii is at home, whereas Notre Dame travels almost a quarter for the way around the world. And 4. You love to hate the Irish. 75% of those reasons are based on emotion alone, a sucker’s reason to place a bet. In real life Hawaii’s home field edge is no better than any average team, as evidenced by their losing to San Jose St. and Cincinnati on the island this season. Also, Notre Dame has a better defense than Hawaii. UND gives up an average of 22. 3 points per game, whereas Hawaii gives up 27. 3 (a 5 point Irish advantage). On offense, Hawaii is better (24. 9 ppg) than Notre Dame (22. 7ppg) but the differential is only 2 points in favor of Hawaii. Strictly by the scoring numbers, Notre Dame should win the game, so avoid using your emotions on this one. Why Not? Notre Dame has no wins this season over teams of any quality, and they do have some very exploitable holes on both sides of the ball. If the Irish can’t pass and it’s a low scoring game, the Warriors could win this one.

The second tier of the Pac-10 behind USC is a jumble of good teams, and Oregon will probably split their last two regular season games, versus Arizona at home and Oregon State on the road. Cal Cal beat BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl in 2005, and this year might be the rematch. Winning the rest of their regular season home games will be tough for the Golden Bears, but going 2-1 versus Oregon State on the road, Stanford at home and Washington at home is very doable. If that’s the case, and some other scenarios in the Pac-10 play out, Cal’s as good a pick as any to get to the Las Vegas Bowl, where their defense should keep them in the game, even if BYU is their opponent. Utah The long shot here is Utah, as they are currently undefeated and ranked No. 8 in the nation. Some people are predicting that they will find their way to the Sugar Bowl or another BCS game, but supposing they lose their next two regular season games- on the road at San Diego State and at home versus BYU, their fall from grace will land them right where a fall from grace should land you- a Christmas vacation in Las Vegas.

If you are a college football fanatic you probably already know how this came to be. You were probably watching the first games that led up to the creation. The very first bowl championship series was played in 1998 at the end of the college football season. Each team wanted bragging rights to be the best. The only problem was that unlike with professional football you have just a fraction of teams and your players will constantly change up as some graduate or accept the draft. One team that won last year might not have any returning senior players. Prior to the game in 1998 there were some attempts at a national game however, the big ten teams didn’t participate, so in actuality it wasn’t a true championship game. All of the various bowls that are out now were rotated to change up the final location of the championship bowl game. There were four actual bowls which rotated each year. They were the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. Other additional bowls are provided to other teams that aren’t in the playoffs for the championship title. People still want to be able to see a final game or ranking for their favorite college team. This was an appeasement for those that wouldn’t make the final cut. This is something akin to a regional championship in the professional league. Now that this system has been implemented a lot of colleges and fans are complaining about how the teams are chosen for the top spots. Unfortunately it isn’t decided upon how a team performs or plays on the field but by polls and computer rankings. Many feel that it provides an unfair advantage to the bigger schools which have larger endowments and more funding to acquire better players. The USA Today newspaper comprises the coaches’ poll. And former players, media and coaches get a say for the Harris Interactive Poll. Finally, an average of six computers provides rankings on the college football teams. This is an intricate design that was created for the championship bowl game. As the season comes to a close each year in January, people root and cheer for their favorite teams. Everyone has an opinion on how it should be fixed or updated. As this is still a relatively new system in place it will take a long time to get updated. And it will not be scrapped for another system until enough people complain about it. But with that in mind it is not easy to set up and maintain a system that will be liked by everyone.

2008 Liberty Bowl – Unpredictable Play Gives Kentucky Late-scoring Win Over East Carolina, 25-19

Imagine yourself as Ventrell Jenkins, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle for Kentucky who has been working all afternoon to help his Wildcat teammates upset East Carolina in the 2008 Liberty Bowl. The score is tied 19-19 and there is exactly 3:02 left in the 4th quarter.
Suddenly, East Carolina running back Norman Whitley fumbles in the backfield and the ball ends up in your hands with daylight in front of you. You take off for dear life, hoping you are faster than you think you are. A player in pursuit has an angle on you and, in a desperate attempt to avoid being stopped, you stiff arm him (knocking out his mouthpiece) and high step your way the rest of the way to score on a 56-yard return.
The next thing you know, your teammates are piling on you in the end zone. Kentucky now leads 25-19 and your Wildcats are on their way to winning their 3rd straight bowl-game victory with coach Rich Brooks looking happier than a skunk eating cabbage. Not even the late, great Paul “Bear” Bryant won 3 consecutive bowl games when he coached the Kentucky Wildcats.
Kentucky held on with 2:56 left, stopping East Carolina and running out the clock to make their 25-19 lead stick. Jenkins wound up being the Most Valuable Player by using an offensive move on his historic 56-yard touchdown return by a defensive tackle not known as a speedster. This is why we love college football and why we watch bowl games. You could not write a more unlikely script and have it come true.
Skip Holtz and his East Carolina Pirates had just won their first ever Conference USA championship title and knocked off Virginia Tech and West Virginia, two BCS conference teams, coming into the Liberty Bowl Friday (1-2-09). The Pirates finished the year at 9-5.
Kentucky was only a 6-6 team coming into the Liberty Bowl, but was not exactly a total pushover, having lost to Alabama by 3 points on the road and to South Carolina by 7 at home. Florida then crushed the Wildcats 63-5 and Kentucky would go on to lose its last 3 games to Georgia, Vanderbilt and Tennessee. But in football, you cannot predict how the ball will bounce; sometimes lady luck comes calling, even for a Wildcat.
After being down 16-3 at the half, senior wide receiver Dave Jones took the ensuing kickoff back for a Liberty Bowl-record 99-yard touchdown return, and the Pirates came to life. Two possessions later back-up quarterback Mike Hartline found sophomore wide receiver Kyrus Lanxter for a 19-yard scoring toss.
The Pirates would manage a field goal in the 3rd quarter but that was it. Kentucky outscored East Carolina 22-3 in the 2nd half. The Wildcat defense held East Carolina to only 3-of-19 third-down conversions.
Neither team had a running game. Hartline, a sophomore who was filling in for injured freshman starter Randall Cobb, completed 19-of-31 for 204 yards. If you are a Kentucky Wildcat fan, the stats meant little and the victory meant everything.
“We still aren’t where we want to be,” said coach Rich Brooks, “but the last 30 minutes was about as beautiful football that I have ever seen. ” Go ahead and gush a little bit, Rich, your guys made it happen. Every now and then, the ball will bounce your way and when it does, you must make the most of it.
Be grateful for your good fortune, coach Brooks, and put an extra steak on Ventrell Jenkins’ plate at the team’s next meal together. And, oh ya, don’t worry about Ventrell’s time in the 40; he has a secret weapon, a vicious straight arm and high step that would match a running back during show time.
