Each team in the NHL plays 82 regular season games, 41 games at home and 41 on the road. Teams used to play all other teams in the league at least once, but this will no longer be the case following implementation of post-lockout changes. Teams will now play 10 inter-conference (that is, not in their own conference) games throughout the entire season, 1 game against each team in two of the three divisions in the opposite conference. Teams will also play 40 games against non-divisional, conference opponents (4 games against each), and 32 games within their division (8 games against each). Two points are awarded for wins, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. At the end of the regular season, the team that finishes with the most points in each division is crowned the division champion. Each Conference consists of three divisions, so these three division champions and five more teams fill out each Conference’s playoff field. In total, 16 teams (3 division champions and 5 additional teams, for a total of 8 from each Conference) qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Read more... (654 words)

This week’s biggest onsale kicks off the holiday season early with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who are always a big seasonal hit. Also new this week is Jay-Z, who will make over 20 shows available for what’s sure to be one of the hottest tours of the fall. In sports, many NHL team schedules go onsale in the next few days including the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Anaheim Ducks. Other good events to keep an eye out for are Blink-182 in California, Dane Cook in Boston, and AC/DC in Philadelphia.

The National Hockey League or NHL is a specialized hockey association comprising of ice hockey teams in North America. NHL is a premier certified ice hockey league in the world. The association is divided into two groups of fifteen-team. Every team comprises of three five-team divisions. The NHL was established in 1917 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with six teams. In the Eastern Conference, champions of the Atlantic, Northeast, and Southeast divisions automatically reach the playoffs, and they will be joined by the teams with the next five best records. It’s the same in the Western Conference; the five best non-division winners will advance along with the champions of the Central, Northwest, and Pacific divisions. Home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs goes to the three division winners in each conference, seeded 1 through 3 based on best record and the No. 4 seed, the team with the next best record. No. 1 plays No. 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5. In the second round, the highest advancing seeded faces the lowest remaining seed, with the two middle seeds squaring off. In all rounds leading up to the Stanley Cup finals, between the winner of the Eastern Conference and the winner of the Western Conference, the higher seed in a series always has home-ice advantage, which means that team hosts Game 1 and 2, and if necessary 5 and 7. The lower seeded teams host Game 3 and 4, and if necessary 6. Every series is best out of seven games; in other words, the first team to four wins takes the series. If a team wins the first four games of a series, of course, the last three are not played. In the Stanley Cup finals, the team with the best record will have home-ice advantage. For example, even if the No. 1 seed advances out of the Western Conference and the No. 2 seed emerges from the Eastern Conference, the No. 2 seed from the East will have home-ice advantage if it had a better record than the West’s No. 1 in the regular season. At the moment, there are two clear-cut favorites to reach the 2009 Stanley Cup finals, which will conclude in June. No team has been more dominant than the San Jose Sharks, who boast a 23-3-2 record (23 wins, three losses, two losses in overtime or shootout. Teams receive two points for a win, one for an overtime loss, and none for an outright loss). The Sharks have a 13-point lead in the Pacific Division and a six-point lead over the second best team in the West, the Detroit Red Wings. In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins lead the way with an impressive 20-5-4 record. The Bruins own a seven-point advantage in the Northeast Division and a four-point lead on the East’s second best team, the New York Rangers. The Red Wings are the NHL’s defending champions, as Detroit defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins four games to two in last season’s final series. Looking to make a repeat appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, Pittsburgh has a solid 16-9-4 record and would easily qualify for the playoffs if the regular season ended today.  Read more... Hockey is a sport in which two teams compete by driving a ball or disc using a stick into the goal or net of the opposing team. Perhaps ice hockey is the most popular form of the game, and college hockey teams usually play on an ice surface.   The NHL, or the National Hockey League, is considered to be the premier league in professional hockey. The National Hockey League rose from the dismantling of the league which preceded it, the National Hockey Association (NHA). After endeavoring—unsuccessfully—to resolve the disputes with Eddie Livingstone, then owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, various executives of three other NHA franchises suspended the NHA, and formed the National Hockey League (NHL). They replaced the Livingstone-headed team with a temporary one, located in Toronto, called the Arenas. Though a separate league, the NHL was considered a continuation of the failed NHA. The NHL borrowed the NHA’s championship trophy, rules, as well as the NHA’s split-season schedule. The owners had originally intended the NHL to operate for one only season. However, the NHA owners eventually suspended the NHA permanently in 1918, completely shutting it down in 1920. During the NHL’s first quarter-century, it competed against two rival major leagues: which were the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Western Canada Hockey League. These three fought for players and the Stanley Cup. The founding of the Boston Bruins in 1924 brought about the expansion of the NHL into the United States. By 1926 the league consisted of ten teams from Ontario, Quebec, the Great Lakes region, and the Northeastern United States. Soon the NHL emerged as the premier major league, and became the sole competitor for the Stanley Cup. The league completed a deal with the Stanley Cup trustees in 1947 to gain full control of the Cup. In most Canadian cities the average joe has no choice but to get tickets from scalpers. . . I had a real good contact in Montreal who could get me tickets at reasonable prices, on average 25-50% more.
But I once bought tickets from a scalper in Atlanta and he sold them to me below cost !
That’s the law of supply and demand . . . .
