This video is part of our After Hours blog series that aims to tell the stories of how our associates fuel their creativity, after hours. After Hours: Lace ‘em up! By Jim Jessen My dad couldnt — and still cant — skate worth a damn, which made it a heavier burden on him when I wouldnt stop harassing him to teach me. He finally caved in and bought me a stick and some skates, and I can still remember trying them out for the first time. Growing up just north of Milwaukee, I had many opportunities to learn to ice skate during the cold winter months. I became hooked on hockey back when Mario Lemieux was leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cups. With my younger brother, I remember playing in tournaments in northern Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota as a youth, while my parents sacrificed countless weekends trudging us here and there every winter. Our high school established a team just prior to my freshman year, and some of my best memories are skating with my friends from school. While I didnt play organized hockey through college, hockey is a passion that has stuck with me. I still skate in an adult league where our team is the two-year defending champions. Although I dont always consciously think of these things, playing hockey has taught me a lot about teamwork, determination, discipline and precision — all things that help me in other parts of my life. Sure, there are other ways to hone these skill, but I cant think of a better way than lacing up a pair …
