    You need to turn this into a pair of simultaneous equations thus:
    Number of Advance tickets = A
    Number of Door tickets = D.
    Total number of tickets = A + D = 514………equation 1
    Advance tickets cost $17 so takings for these = 17*A or 17A
    Door tickets cost $20 so takings for these = 20*D or 20D
    total takings = 17A + 20D = 9158……..equation 2
    Multiply Equation 1 by 20 to give 20A+20D=10280
    Subtract Equation 2………………….17A+20D=9158
    3A = 1122
    so A = 374
    If 374 tickets were sold in advance, 514 – 374 = 140 were sold on the door. Answer A, your friend is right.
